The Amish of Pennsylvania Old Dutch Country
The Amish have their roots of the Mennonite Community and the population as a whole stresses humility, family and community from the seperation of the modern world. They take seriously the biblical commands to seperate themselves from the things in the world. Their lifestyle involves using air or hydraulic motors as the source of their power energy, they use horses and buggies for transportation, although, even though owning a car is not permitted in the Amish community, being a passenger or hiring is another way of transportation. They are also called the "Plain People" due to their simple and plain clothing, they work together as a unit to form a strong bond in the Amish community. They use horse drawn carriages for field work, basically they live simple-technologically impaired I would say. Although they resist cultural influences, they are they are willing to compromise with the modern world tapping in its benefits, at the same time preserving the Amish identity.

This is an interesting account of the Amish economy, and how different it is from the mainstream North American economy, even though geographically, one is within another!
ReplyDeleteThis ideas of Amish economy is good, as they resist cultural influences. they live simple-technologically impaired.they work together as a unit to form a strong Amish community.
ReplyDeleteI think it would be awsome if small communities (within the bigger cities) took some customs from the Amish culture. Working together and producing much our own products would greatly reduce the speed of global warming.
ReplyDeleteI think it is really neat how they work together and not only are they helping eachother but as cheddacheeze said if more people in the world did that it would reduce global warming. I would love to dress "plain" as you said in your post. People in our culture are way to critical, it would be alot eaiser if we all dressed palin.
ReplyDeletei agree with the comments before me. i think the amish have a great lifestyle, because they are simple and plain. they are envoronment friendly by carpooling instead of owning their own car. we could learn a lot from them. they accept and respect other cultures and non judging while staying true to their own.
